Personal Statements

So for those of you who don't know, I'm applying to law school. Well, technically I should have applied two months ago but my application process has been delayed a bit due to one outrageously ludicrous requirement, the personal statement. Along with all of the other insane and costly requirements for the application process you have to write a personal statement. It's supposed to be a way for you to introduce yourself to the admissions board. Maybe relate a unique experience. State why you are interested in going to law school. Explain why you would be an asset to the law program. Blah, blah, blah. I didn't think that this would be too difficult for me but it's turning out to be a major hangup. The application deadline is coming up pronto but every time I sit down to write my personal statement I keep coming up short. It's not good enough. It's not deep enough. It's not articulate enough. It (I'm sorry Mom) just plain sucks. I think the biggest problem is.....I'm just not that interesting. Sure I've had a few accomplishments in my life, but nothing that really makes me unique. I'm just an average girl trying to live the dream. This is such a crucial aspect of the application though, I really feel the need to submit something extraordinary. I probably won't get accepted anyway since I'm applying so close to the deadline but if I don't at least complete the application and turn it in then I'll always wonder. Who knows, if my personal statement turns out to be really bad then maybe I'll post it so you can all get a good laugh! Until then, feel free to give me other ideas of something to do with my life just in case this whole law school thing doesn't work out.

You should include in your personal statement that one time you were burned by a lawyer and your searching for revenge.

Or better yet, you should learn how to count cards and go to Las Vegas and make millions of dollars, get busted by Security, and then help them get to the mob boss. That would make a personal statement that would "Jump off the Page".

No, no, I think I would go the "Legally Blonde" route. Submit a video with lots of scantily clad attractive people and demonstrate your ability to use legal jargon in every day situations. Its a winner.

I think that submitting your favorite "Deep Thought" would be a great way to get their attention!

Kandis, you are anything but average. You are funny and smart and delightful. Go with your funny, smart, delightful instincts. It will be great!

Yeah, the personal statement was my big hangup on the application to med school too; I feel for you. I'd like to give some good advice, but to be honest if I had to do it again I'd probably just go cry in a corner rather than write the stupid thing.
Good luck.

um... um... Sheesh, I can't even think of a clever response to your blog, so it's a sure bet I could never write a personal statement. Good luck!

Your average is what most people only aspire to! You rock in so many ways. I know that your personal statement will come and that it will reflect the wonderful, accomplished woman that you are.

One idea is playing up the fact that you are the first female college graduate in a long line of women...(at least I don't remember that your mom graduated. Sorry, Ellen, if you did and I didn't know about it.)

I am sure that what you have written is great. You don't give yourself enough credit. They will be lucky to have you. Good luck!

I remember agonizing over a similar statement when I applied to BYU. Don't despair; you are a witty, articulate writer. Good luck!

I think you should write about how you had to wash your hair in buckets while living in remote DR and that you speak the espanol and love Jesus and you're really smart and I freakin' can't believe you're applying to law school. You're so living my dream!

and you're SOOO not average.
